#739 Webelos

I've missed a few weeks post but we've been busy. Brandon M., Andrew M., Donnie S., Brandon R. and Wayne H. are officially boy scouts now. I'm very proud of the boys. At last months Blue and Gold banquet the boys received their Arrow of Light and last night they went through the official crossover ceremony into the Boy Scout Troop. They are now a part of the troop as it's newest patrol, The Flaming Arrows!

We still have one or two boys who will be working on Webelos achievements for a few months. We will be meeting at the boy scout meetings Monday nights at 7pm. It should be fun and they'll get a real taste of what the boy scouts do.

Weekly Den Update!

Five of the boys have completed everything they need for their Arrow of Light with the exception of some memorization.

We also had a bit of a contest to see who could write the best short paragraph describing something we've done in the den. I told the boys I would post the best one. I've decided to post two.

1) At Elk Lick we had a klondike on Saturday and Sunday. We got first place for the rat fishing, second place for the best pack and third place for skiing. We went with the Boy Scouts. It was a lot of fun.

2) GAMES WE PLAYED
We played charades, kings chair and the guessing game. What we do for kings chair is you use the wall and no chairs and sit as long as you can. The way we play the guessing game or charades is we have a basket of full of things to act out and you grab one and do it. (and people have to guess what your action was) That's some games!

The Klondike!

4 of the boys attended the Klondike this last weekend and had a great time. They did very well for their first time getting 2nd place overall and 2 first and a third out of the 7 events!

I just received word that Wednesday night the bird guy will be joining us again (he was a big hit last year)! And remember this pack night is the cake contest!

Weekly Update!

This week we met at the Bolivar Fire Department and the boys did some community service work. They cleared the snow from in front of the doors (the stuff the plows missed). They also learned how to load the hose on the fire trucks and even were up on the trucks assisting the firemen! We also want to thank Randy Torrey and the rest of the crew for taking the time with the boys.

They had a good time. We also discussed the Klondike which we leave for on Saturday morning at 8am (from the Parish Hall).

Weekly Update!

Last night was a bit chaotic. We wrapped up the boys Outdoorsman achievement by having some of them pitch a tent. We also spent some time working on knots for their Arrow of Light. Most of them can now do the square knot but most still need a bit of work on their two half hitch. They took their ropes home with them so they can work on it.

I also handed out information about the Klondike which is coming up very soon. It's a overnighter at Elk Lick. We have a cabin rented. It is mandatory that all boys have an accompanying adult. It should be a good time just make sure you bring plenty of warm weather clothing as it could be very cold!

This week we worked on the handyman achievement. The boys learned some basic maintenance for their bicycles. Oiling the chain and cables, adjusting the derailers and adjusting the seat were all demonstrated. They also learned how to check the fluids on a car (oil, washer fluid, brake fluid and radiator fluid.

We also started working on some new knots. The 2 half hitch and the square knot. We still need to work on them a bit more but we're getting there.

Next week more knots and we wrap up the Handyman!

Pack night went well with prizes and badges going to the boys who sold popcorn!

Also I (Mr Schiffer) have a new phone number which I can be reached at. 585-928-1920is the number if you need to reach me.

There will be no den meeting either this coming week or the next due to the Holidays. Have a Merry Christmas and a good New Years holiday!!!

Last night we had our friend Danny Chan come in and talk to the boys about China and Chinese language. A former scout from Hong Kong, he showed the boys a sample of some Chinese writing and taught them how to write things like heart, promise, fire and ice. They also talked about Communism and the importance of our freedoms.

I have never seen the boys ask so many questions. Thank you Mr. Chan!

We also had the District Meeting last night where the top sellers of popcorn were given the chance to pick out some prizes. Andrew Morris took home a electric scooter and Donnie Schiffer took home a remote control helicopter!

It was a good week for scouts.

I missed a week. Let the floggings begin!

Seriously though... We've had a busy 2 weeks. Last week we started working on the Comunicator Achievement by playing the communication game. The boys pick an emotion out of a hat and had to act it out. Everything from 'afraid' to 'bored' to 'moody'. It was a good time.

Then last night we had pack night where the boys did the days of the week song using both song and sign language. We also had several boys get achievement awards and Andrew Morris earned his Webelos badge.

The popcorn sale was a hit! The pack sold $10,861! And including the boys scout troop over $15,000! Good job guys.

There is no den meeting next week for the Thanksgiving holiday. The following week (Wednesday the 3rd) we have a Chinese American coming in to discuss the Chinese language and its history.

This week we completed the Handyman achievement for the boys. We discussed various tools and how to use them safely. Next week, we work on the Forester achievement!

The boys were given the homework of drawing a diagram of a tree in cross section showing the rings of a tree.

We painted our scarecrow on Tuesday night. The boys did a fine job. It is ready for Wednesdays Pack night!

Tomorrow night, pack night Halloween party! If you wear a costume you don't need your uniform. If you don't please wear your blues and golds.

We started building our scarecrow. The boys learned how to use a jigsaw and spent some time sanding the edges smooth. I predict it will look great when they're done. Pictures will be forthcoming!

Saturday is the Fishing Derby. The Webelos will be fishing in the afternoon starting around 1pm. We also have a group staying the night in a cabin. This year we are hoping to catch the big one!

Our first meeting!

This week we planned out the first half of our year. We are planning on working on our craftsmen and artist badge first. The first project will be a plywood cutout that the boys will help build and paint!

Next week we start selling popcorn so be sure to support the boys if you can.

No pictures this week but I will get some up next week. Wish us luck...
